2011 - Shostakovich, Mozart and Friends

Colin Laursen and his string quartet perform the Shostakovich 8th
— On June 3, 2011, we presented Shostakovich, Mozart and Friends: An Evening of Celebration. This tribute to our senior students Emma Armstrong-Carter and Colin Laursen included both masterworks and premieres.
The premieres included a piano fugue by Colin Laursen, three spicy clarinet solos entitled “Colors” by Abe Lange, the wonderfully wild “The State of Time” for flute, violin and piano by Michael Jon Bennett and the exuberant and moving “Native American Suite” by Gabe Crist for four flutes, violin, pipe organ, two violas, two acoustic guitars, table drum, and sleigh bells.
A superb performance of Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet brought shafts of setting sun and a standing ovation to the close of the first half.

Emma Armstrong-Carter and Julie Harris play Mozart while Colin Laursen turns pages - what a team!
All throughout high school, pianist Emma Armstrong-Carter loved playing Mozart!  She played all his solos sonatas and all of the four-handed pieces with her teacher, Julie Harris.
So it was fitting that at her graduation concert, we finished the program with her favorite composer.
Mozart’s delightful four-handed Andante with Variations completed the concert with musical laughter and fun.
